UFC President, Dana White offers out four UFC contracts after the second series of the Contender series delivers a night of eye catching performances.
For the first time in its history – albeit a brief history – Dana White’s ‘Tuesday Night Contender Series’ saw four fighters earn a much coveted contract to fight for the UFC.
The most contracts handed out had been three in the first series of the program and it’s a positive sign for future fighters vying for a spot at the top table of MMA.
After criticising the show last week for having omitted good performances over a quick KO showing, I find myself being a lot less scathing in my recap this week.
The four fighters who earned contracts were:
- Anthony Hernandez
- Matt Sayles
- Ryan Spann
- Dwight Grant
Perhaps the most impressive victory of the night came from former contestant Ryan Spann who fell short last time out but in just 26 seconds of the very first round, he pushed the action early and was able to sink in a very nasty guillotine choke against Emiliano Sordi.
Anthony Hernandez also impressed in his bout with Jordan Wright as he dispatched him with a huge KO landing a right hook and followed it up with a left to earn him a victory and eventual contract at just 40 seconds into their fight.
Setting The Precedent
This week sets a precedent for the remainder of the series and not picking fighters who finish their fights in style regardless of what round the stoppage occurs in will be seen as hypocritical.
It’s possible that handing out four contracts last night was due to Dana White’s mood on the evening. He appeared buoyant in the various replays shown on the broadcast but I’d hope that his demeanour doesn’t reflect how he is awarding contracts.
It was an excellent night of fights and it was very refreshing to see that many fighters get rightly rewarded for their efforts.
