Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series – S2, Ep 6 – Preview

Nick Newell among ten hopefuls who are clamouring to make their way into the UFC in episode 6 of DWTNCS.

Tonight is arguably the most anticipated nights of the Contender Series to date as Nick Newell (14-1) is hoping that his good run of form will earn him a shot into the UFC by beating Alex Munoz (4-0)

“Notorious” Newell is craving to show Dana White that his ability overrides his obvious disability. For those who have never heard of Nick Newell, he was born with a congenital amputation of his left arm which stops just at the wrist.

Newell found it difficult to find fights in his early MMA career as many didn’t wish to fight a “one armed fighter”. Having fought 15 times in his professional career, Newell has shown that he is no slouch and the 32 year old has won three of his last five fights with his only loss to date coming from current UFC lightweight, Justin Gaethje.

Newell is a submission specialist and has 9 victories by this method to date but Newell knows that he is the one that everybody will be watching.

His opponent, Alex Munoz is early in his professional career but he knows that beating a highly touted fighter like Newell in dramatic fashion could propel him into the UFC.

Munoz made his pro career in 2015 and has finished three of his last four fights (2 KO’s/1 SUB).

It’s a big ask for Munoz in many respects having not fought for nearly 2 years but if he can utilise his movement and not get dragged into a brawl with Newell, he stands a very good chance.

Perhaps the most intriguing fight on the card is Sodiq Yusuff (6-1) vs Mike Davis (5-0).

Yusuff is a known wild brawler and throws his shots with absolute conviction. While, he is prone to eating counter punches, he  always pushes forward and looks for early finishes.

He is an ideal candidate for the type of fighter that UFC President Dana White looks for.

In his way is Mike Davis who is unbeaten in his pro career to date. Primarily a striker, Davis is also a solid wrestler which may be come into effect if he doesn’t like what Yussef is throwing on the feet.

If the two do indeed go toe to toe, expect some serious fireworks .
