Mark Henry takes blame for elbow controversy at UFC Calgary

In the main event on Saturday evening, Eddie Alvarez threw an illegal elbow which ultimately allowed Poirier to finish the fight.

During the second round in an intense back and forth battle, Eddie Alvarez looked to be close to finishing the fight against Dustin Poirier but an illegal elbow put paid to what could have been a finishing sequence.

Referee Marc Goddard saw Alvarez throwing an illegal downward elbow known as the “12-6 elbow”. As a result of the foul, both fighters were stood up and brought to a standing position.

As a result, Poirier was able to earn himself a big victory over Alvarez which now propels “The Diamond” into a very promising position for a lightweight title shot.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on ESPN on Monday, Alvarez’s coach Mark Henry took the blame for the defeat and the signalling given to Alvarez.

“I wanted elbows. I’m no idiot. I gave the wrong signal. I take the blame for that”.

Video footage after the fight showed Henry calling for the illegal elbow and was happy to come clean on Helwani’s show.

“I wanted a slanted elbow. It was in the heat of the moment in the middle of a fight. Eddie (Alvarez) was looking at me when I was doing the motion. Like I say, I take the blame”

Alvarez fought his last fight on his current UFC deal and no word is yet forthcoming regarding a future contract.
