The much praised Contender Series returns for a seventh week with 10 fighters hoping to break through into the UFC with an impressive victory tonight.
It may be considered a slightly different form of fighting in terms of pressure to deliver and seek a big finish, but DWTNCS has delivered some outstanding performances and contests over the last six weeks.
Tonight’s fight card is unlikely to deviate from that formula and is headlined by Roosevelt Roberts (5-0) and Garrett Gross (11-7) in a lightweight contest.
Gross is the more experience fighter and despite a series of losses, he has bounced back and is currently riding a four fight win streak with all four coming by way of stoppage.
The heavy handed Gross is hoping to showcase his striking prowess in front of UFC boss Dana White and earn a shot in the promotion.
Standing opposite to him tonight will be undefeated prospect Roosevelt Roberts who has begun life as a professional mixed martial artist with a bang.
Roberts has finished all five of his opponents to date and on paper meets all the credentials that Dana White looks for in a fighter.
It should be a very fun fight with both combatants capable of halting a fight at any given opportunity.
Elsewhere on the card, an intriguing heavyweight contest catches the eye as Don’Tale Mayes (4-2) is set to do battle with Mitchell Sipe (4-0)
In a division that could do with an injection of new talent, this is an important bout in a weight class that is very ‘top heavy’ in it’s current state.
It’s unlikely that either fighter will be thrown in with a top #15 opponent right away but one or two statement fights could fast track either guy up the ladder.
Mayes is returning to the Contender Series after suffering a defeat last year to Allen Crowder late in the final round. He is certainly hoping that his experience in the cage and the fighting environment will hold him in good stead.
Since his stint on the show, Mayes is coming off a victory in April and is seeking to gain a streak of wins and push on.
Contesting Mayes is a much highly touted 22 year old, Mitchell Sipe who is unbeaten as a professional and has finished 3 of his 4 fights to date with his most recent win coming in March of this year.
Sipe is regarded as one of the “new breed” generation of fighters and if you are to believe the buzz on social media, this kid could be one of the next big things.
The heavy handed Sipe is a strong pressure fighter and will look to clinch Mayes and land some short devastating elbows and finish the fight early.
All the action kicks off at 1am (BST) on UFC Fight Pass.
