Late last night, the UFC finally announced it’s main event for UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden and it is fair to say that fans are not happy.
We are a month away from the UFC’s annual Madison Square Garden show since MMA was made legal in New York City. It’s a venue that has seen some incredible main events over the years including the return of GSP and witnessed Conor McGregor becoming a two weight world champion.
Fans had been clamouring for Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz to headline the card. The lightweight pair had already been scheduled to fight on the card and a new 165lbs title was mooted which now seems to have fallen by the wayside.
Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke the news last night that Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks would indeed be headlining UFC 230 for the vacant women’s flyweight title.
Shevchenko was due to fight former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk later on this year which has now obviously been scrapped in favour of this title fight.
Eubanks is 3-2 having only made her UFC debut in June of this year having beaten Lauren Murphy by unanimous decision.
Shevchenko (15-3) is certainly coming into the fight with more experience having fought 6 times already in the UFC.
It looks like a mismatch on paper and it’s understandable that fans are not happy with the choice of main event.
