Short Shots: McGregor ban, Bellator woes version 10.2, Flyweight title confusion and Dana White hypocrisy

Short Shots is back. A laid back look at the ridiculousness of MMA in one convenient article. Like a one stop shop for extremely lazy “journalists” who can’t be bothered penning individual articles. Enjoy.

MCGREGOR OFF THE ROAD

Not that it’s that important but every website in the world should have at least one mention of Conor McGregor each week… or if you’re Joe.ie, every hour of every day….

The Notorious one has been given a six month ban after he was caught speeding last year. To put this in context, he has been punished more in this instance than for throwing shit at a bus and injuring fighters in New York.

Justice… A wonderful thing.

BELLATOR BACK ON OUR SCREENS – EXCEPT FOR THOSE IN IRELAND AND THE UK

I want to praise Bellator. I really do. But heaping praise on a promotion that is actively shunning a market who want to watch their product legitimately is only going to do harm to them and to be honest, so it should.

Top prospect Kiefer Crosbie of SBG is due to fight in Italy this Saturday afternoon and because we don’t have DAZN – the new streaming service – we are getting punished and being given no alternative to watch it.

Why, as a promotion would you try to host events in this region and expect people to pay for tickets to watch fighters they have never seen before to be invested in them?

For the millionth time Bellator, please get your shit together.

FLYWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE FOR A DIVISION THAT NO LONGER EXISTS

The UFC’s top brass have done it again. Henry Cejudo defends his 125lbs strap against current bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw next year.

On first glance, you’d say that this is an excellent fight to make but when the UFC cut the entire division loose, it makes zero sense to have a flyweight title. It just screams stupidity but perhaps more foolishly, I’m still going to watch the hell out of it.

We seem to be entering the “double champ” era of the UFC having come out of the dreaded “interim champ” era that plagued our dear sport.

Nonsensical? Yes… Entertaining? Abso-fucking-lutely.

DANA WHITE IN CONTRADICTORY STATEMENT SHOCKER

So, Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz III happened last week and boy was it depressing. Perhaps the most entertaining thing to come out of that particular event was Dana White calling Oscar De Lay Hoya – the promoter for that eh, ‘fight’ – a “coke head”.

White was critical of De La Hoya for allowing the contest to go ahead and cited fighter safety as the key issue.

Just 24 hours after his comments, a story emerged that the UFC were finalising a 4 fight deal with over the hill UFC featherweight BJ Penn who has lost his last five fights.

This particular segment has been brought to you by the word ‘hypocrite’.
