Bellator 218: Emmanual Sanchez vs Georgi Karakhanyan 2 preview

Bellator returns to our screens this Friday night with a featured featherweight rematch between Emmanuel Sanchez and Georgi Karakhanyan.

The two last met in January of 2017 in a hard fought battle that saw Sanchez come away with the victory via majority decision. Since then, both men have been on very differing paths since being drawn against each other once again.

Emmanuel Sanchez (17-4) has gone 3-1 in his last four fights dropping a unanimous decision loss to Patricio Pitbull back in November and now the Wisconsin native is hoping that a big performance against Karakhanyan could put him back in title contention.

Georgi Karakhanyan (28-8-1) has had very mixed fortunes since fighting Sanchez with 2-2-1NC in his last five fights, two of which were outside of Bellator.

The 33 year old Russian could really do with putting together a consistent streak but this is a very different Emmanuel Sanchez he faces but Karakhanyan is hoping that his vast experience will see him earn victory on Friday night.

Despite varying results between the pair since their first meeting, it’s still fair to say that Sanchez and Karakhanyan match up very well on paper and both boast excellent wrestling and submission skills.

If the fight hits the floor, and it’s quite likely, we could be treated to an intriguing game of cat and mouse on the canvas. Alternatively, the two could be so evenly matched that we witness a stalemate for fifteen minutes.

However, Sanchez has finished two triangle chokes in 2 of his last 3 fights and has vastly improved his submission offence from his back in recent bouts which could be trouble for Karakhanyan if he’s not wise to Sanchez’s tricky submission attempts.

What would worry Karakhanyan is that he hasn’t finished an opponent inside a round since 2016. Doctor stoppages and injuries to opponents mid fight have given him a helping hand along the way but the Russian would rather finish a fight cleanly during a fight.

The featherweight clash is live on Sky Sports Action from 1am and Sky Sports Main Event will begin broadcasting from 2am due to live basketball beforehand.
