Russian fans were delighted with their hometown fighters big submission win at UFC St. Petersburg.
After a fascinating exchange of throws, takedowns and technical wrestling, it was Alexander Yakovlev who sent an on watching Russian crowd into a frenzy with a crafty submission over Alex da Silva.
In the first round, Yakovlev was dumped face first on to the canvas by da Silva who was constantly searching for a submission but the Russian was able to overcome early adversity to survive the opening five minutes.
Once the second round commenced it was Yakovlev who returned the favour for da Silva and ended up dumping him to the canvas but when da Silva attempted to transition and find another takedown of his own, Yakovlev was able to sprawl and defend the takedown and threw elbows that were able to land successfully.
The elbows were able to give Yakovlev an opportunity to clasp his hands together and sink in a guillotine choke to end the fight.
